It is our job to properly diagnose why your home or business heating unit is not properly working. However, knowing some of the largest reasons why your furnace is not providing adequate heat can help you as a decision maker know what steps to take next.

  1. Your thermostat has malfunctioned or was not properly setup. The first step whenever your heating isn’t working correctly is to make sure that your settings have not been accidentally changed. If you know how to program your thermostat it is a good idea to make sure that it has been set up correctly. If a problem persists you should call a professional company to look at things.
  2. Dirty or clogged filters. We cannot overstate how important it is for the functionality and longevity of your unit that it gets proper air circulation. We recommend that you change your air filter every 60 days at the very least, more if the air quality around your home or business is particularly dirty.
  3. Poor maintenance of your furnace. This is especially a concern if you are not the original owner of the furnace, for example, if you have recently purchased a home and the furnace has been previously owned. We recommend that you setup a maintenance plan with a professional heating company. Not only will this protect your unit, it is often necessary to keep the warranty intact.
  4. Inspect your air ducts. Let’s say that you have kicked on your furnace and you have certain rooms in your house and certain rooms in your house that are still cold. A common issue that people run into is that they have inadvertently closed or closed a vent. This is troublesome because it stops your unit from properly circulating warm air. If enough vents are blocked it can also cause your furnace to overheat because it is not getting proper air flow.
  5. Make sure your gas valve is open. It is a good idea to inspect the area where your furnace is operating. Sometimes people will shut-off their gas valve when their furnace is not being operated in the summer months. Your furnace will not be able to create heat if it is not being supplied with gas. If you are comfortable make sure that the gas valve is open and on.
